Channel 4 News has learned that a key Tory organiser has become the latest figure to defect to the UK independence party

It's an uphill battle - the Conservative leader David Cameron admitted today, as he launched a new campaign to re-connect with voters in the North of England.

Mr Cameron denied it was an act of desperation, after a poor showing at the last local elections.

But his new policies aren't going down well with sections of his own party - Channel 4 News has learned that a key Tory organiser has become the latest figure to defect to the UK independence party.
