The Swiss, who was appearing in his seventh consecutive final at the All England Club, won 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 to claim the 15th Grand Slam title of his career, overtaking the previous record held by Pete Sampras, who was watching the match from the Royal Box.

Incredibly, Federer only broke Roddick's powerful serve once in the entire match and that crucial mment came in the 30th game of the deciding set, more than four hours after they had walked on to centre court.

It was the third time Federer had beaten Roddick in a Wimbledon final and he fired 50 aces in the process.

Federer will now overtake Rafael Nadal at the top of the world rankings and he holds three of the four Grand Slam titles.
