From Westminster to the frontline in Afghanistan, the nation paused to remember the sacrifices made by servicemen and women past and present.

The traditional Armistice Day two-minute silence at 11am was observed across the country and at UK military bases in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan.

There was particular focus on the horrors and heroism of the First World War, with the Queen leading a service to mark the passing of the 1914-1918 generation.
