There has been a 71 per cent increase in the diagnoses of Down's syndrome pregnancies, according to research published in the British Medical Journal.
Researchers at Queen Mary University have warned that women who choose to delay the age at which they start a family are most at risk.
But there has been a decline in the number of babies born with Down's syndrome because 90 per cent of mothers diagnosed with the condition are choosing to have abortions.
