Detention limit 'may not be enough'

The 28-day limit on holding terror suspects without charge may not be sufficient, a key Government adviser has said.

Lord Carlile of Berriew, Gordon Brown's terror law watchdog, said there were a "small number" of cases where the period may not be long enough. The Government is consulting on extending the time limit but Tory leader David Cameron vowed to oppose any increase unless there was new evidence to justify it.

Lord Carlile said: "I think there is a small number of cases, possibly a very small number but of very important cases, for which a 28-day period may be insufficient."
