Clean-up under way after London blaze
Updated on 19 March 2009
A huge salvage operation is under way after firefighters brought a blaze in an historic area of central London under control.
A team of 75 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled the blaze in a building of Chancery Lane in Holborn.
London Fire Brigade said three 15kg propane cylinders were on the roof of the building which housed the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal but the fire was now "surrounded and under control".
"About 75 per cent of the roof was damaged by the fire," said and LFB spokeswoman.
"We have an extensive salvage operation on floors up to the fourth floor."
More than 100 people were evacuated after the blaze broke out in an office block on Wednesday afternoon.
One eyewitness described a "huge black plume of smoke" rising into the sky as fire engines rushed to the scene.
A Tribunals Service spokeswoman said it is likely that all hearings at Field House will be postponed for the remainder of the week.
