The severed head and hand of a woman have been found by children playing on a beach in Scotland.

Tayside Police said the head was in a plastic bag when the youngsters made the grim discovery in Arbroath, Angus.

The body parts were found by two young sisters who immediately went home and told their mother, who contacted police.

An area of the beachfront has been cordoned off while officers carry out an extensive search.

The force said the body parts were being removed and would be subject to further "detailed forensic examination".

A Holmes (Home Office Large and Major Crime Enquiry System) Team was set up to help with the investigation.
