A clash of politics and protocol has overshadowed the 65th D-Day commemorations.

Now, after an outcry over the failure to invite anyone from the royal family, Prince Charles has confirmed he will attend.

An official invitation was finally issued today by President Sarkozy. But much to the disappointment of veterans, the Queen will not be going - even though it was President Obama who intervened.

The French authorities have blamed the British government for deciding who should attend what they called "primarily a Franco-American ceremony".
