Charles: rethink of sovereign's role

Updated on 16 November 2008

The Prince of Wales will break the traditional vow of silence and continue to campaign on political issues when he becomes king, a close aide has revealed.

Writing in the Sunday Times, Jonathan Dimbleby, the prince's friend and biographer, said: "There are now discreet moves afoot to redefine the future role of the sovereign so that it would allow a king to speak out on matters of national and international importance in ways that, at the moment, would be unthinkable."

For the last 50 years the Queen has kept her political thoughts private, sharing them only with the Prime Minister and her closest aides.
