Channel 4 News wins 2006 Mental Health Media Award

Channel 4 News wins the 2006 Mental Health Media Awards, having both shortlisted for both of the two nominations.

Channel 4 News last night won the 2006 Mental Health Media Awards, presented annually for print, radio and television journalism that "challenge the misinformation and stereotypes that surround mental health and includes the voices of people who have experienced mental health problems". The ceremony took place 10 October at BAFTA.

The win was no surprise, as the shortlist contained just two reports, both for Channel 4 News: the winning entry, "Iraq Mental Meltdown", was made for Channel 4 News by Dr Omer Ali, with Guardian Films. The other shortlisted entry was a Home News report "Specialist childrens units face closure", by Bridgid Nzekwu.

Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow said, "This is a tremendous honour. Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of society... neglect that is mirrored in the mainstream press.

We at Channel 4 News are delighted to have made some contribution toward remedying this, but there is still so much more to be done, and we shall try to do more."
