Cameron pledges UK tax law for MPs
Updated on 13 December 2009
David Cameron has tried to defuse the long-running controversy over the tax affairs of wealthy Tory backer, Lord Ashcroft, promising a new law requiring all MPs and peers to pay taxes in the UK.
The Tory leader said that an incoming Conservative government would rush through legislation requiring all parliamentarians "to be or be treated as a full UK taxpayer" if they were to retain their seats at Westminster.
Labour dismissed the move as a "red herring", saying that it was simply a tactic to put off questions about Lord Ashcroft's tax status until after the general election was out of the way.
