Better psychiatric care in Africa than London

You stand a better chance of recovering from a psychotic episode in rural Africa than in central London.

That is the controversial view of clinical psychologist Dr Richard Bentall, whose new book Doctoring the Mind takes aim at Britain's psychiatric services and their habit of prescribing powerful and often ineffective drugs.
His view that psychiatric treatment has done little to improve human welfare has struck a chord with some in the profession while others claim his arguements are divisive and dangerous.
