Balls faces 'fit to teach' backlash
Updated on 13 November 2009
Schools Secretary Ed Balls is facing a backlash from teachers over plans to make them undergo five-year check-ups to ensure they are fit to teach.
Some 10,000 members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) have signed postcards declaring their opposition to the plans.
Under the proposals, contained in a White Paper published in June, teachers who fail their check-up will be banned from the classroom.
