Ashes illegal betting fears
Updated on 19 August 2009
There are fears the fifth Ashes test at the Oval has been the target for illegal betting.
The match is expected to attract £10m in bets but it has been revealed an Australian player was approached by a man believed to be linked to an underground gambling network in a London hotel last month.
Cricket officials say the unnamed player, who is not under suspicion, immediately alerted his team management.
An International Cricket Council spokesman said: "I can confirm the ACSU (the ICC's anti-corruption and security unit) has received a report from Australia team management.
"The anti-corruption and security unit of the ICC has developed and implemented a fairly comprehensive education programme for all international players and every single international player has undergone that education and is aware of his responsibilities to report any suspicious activity that he feels he may have been subject to.
"It seems in this case that education has hit home and we have received a report that the ACSU will now investigate."
