A team of young Gunners have beaten Wigan Athletic 3-0 in their Carling Cup fourth round match.

Jay Simpson grabbed two goals for Arsenal in his first start for the club, and a third came from Carlos Vela at Emirates Stadium to put the team into the fifth round.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "This is the most complete team of youngsters we have had."

Simpson, one of eight teenagers to start, latched on to a pass from 16-year-old midfielder Jack Wilshere to open the scoring just before half-time before grabbing his second in the 66th minute.

In other fourth round games, a late penalty from Carlos Tevez saw Manchester United secure a quarter-final berth at the expense of QPR, when they beat them 1-0.

The game would have gone into extra-time had it not been for Peter Ramage's rash tackle on England Under-19 striker Daniel Welbeck.

Red Devils' Argentina striker Tevez was not about to pass up the opportunity and confidently beat an otherwise faultless Radek Cerny to steer United through at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Derby beat Leeds 2-1, Watford overcame championship rivals Swansea City 1-0, while Stoke City beat Rotherham United 2-0.
