Upson reveals hard work behind goal
Updated on 20 November 2008
West Ham defender Matthew Upson hopes his first goal for England will help him stake a claim for a place in the team.
For the third England match in a row, Upson started the friendly against Germany and he poked home the first goal as England won 2-1.
Upson took the place of the injured Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and he proved he can be a key man at corners when the ball fell at his feet in the six-yard box in the first half.
He said: "It was very important for me to get off the mark with a goal. It wasn't the best of strikes but I need more goals and I have been analysing runs in the box.
"It's something that I have focused on to improve my game. It's important to be a threat in the opposition box and I think I'm getting better at that.
"Playing for England is very important to me and it's something I've worked very hard to achieve. I want to keep improving and show I deserve to be here and I'm capable of playing."
