Manchester United have won the first all-English Champions League final.

Goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar saved Chelsea's seventh penalty in a dramatic shootout after a 1-1 draw in Moscow.

United had taken the lead midway through the first half when Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo headed home from Wes Brown's cross.

But Chelsea equalised just before half-time when Frank Lampard pounced on a rebound and prodded home from close range.

There were angry scenes in the second half of extra time after Carlos Tevez booted the ball into touch rather than kick it back to Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech after Chelsea players received treatment for cramp.

In the argument, Drogba slapped United defender Nemanja Vidic in the face and was duly sent off.

In the shootout, Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech saved Ronaldo's penalty and John Terry stepped up with the chance to score the winning goal for Chelsea, but slipped and saw his shot hit the post.

Van Der Sar saved a spot-kick from Nicolas Anelka to win a third European championship for Manchester United 50 years after the Munich air disaster.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "That is the first penalty shoot-out I have ever won."
