Paul Scholes was sent off as Manchester United squandered a chance to lift a trophy two weeks into the season.

The midfielder got a second yellow card for a deliberate handball in the area in the dying moments of the Uefa Super Cup match against Zenit St Petersburg.

United's 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Russians highlighted how thin on numbers the Champions League holders are in attack.

Zenit, who chalked up a notable double last season by securing the Uefa Cup and their domestic title, took the game to United from the kick-off.

With Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick both sidelined, Anderson and Nani were given added responsibility in midfield, but they struggled to make an impact.

Rooney almost put United ahead twice but it was left to Vidic to pull one back after a goalmouth scramble in the 73rd minute.

United's irritation at playing second fiddle to Zenit was emphasised at the death with Scholes dismissed and he will now be suspended for the home Champions League game against Spanish side Villarreal.
