Uefa final: Rangers fans' rampage

Updated on 15 May 2008

Greater Manchester police release video of Glasgow Rangers fans attacking their officers in clashes during last night's Uefa cup final.

The violence was triggered when one of eight big screens in the city centre, due to be showing the match for fans without tickets, failed just before kick-off.

42 fans were arrested and technicians trying to fix the screen had to withdraw after being pelted with bottles.

Manchester council say that as a result of last night's trouble, there will be no screens around the city centre next week when Manchester United face Chelsea in the Champions' League final.

Rangers' defeat to Zenit St Petersburg was the beginning of a night of unrest in Manchester.

Fans and police began to clash during the game when a technical fault meant that two of the big screens went blank.

Thousands had to move to another part of the city to watch the rest of the match and frustration was growing.

After the game, when crowds began to disperse, disturbances began.

A Zenit fan, receiving treatment in the middle of a road, had apparently been struck with a glass bottle as he was being treated by police.

An ambulance was unable to get through the grid locked roads.

Officers in riot gear were then sent onto the street, as some missiles were thrown.

Police said trouble was caused by a minority of fans but many more appeared to get caught up as police tried to restore order on the streets.

It led some fans to accuse the police of brutality.

Greater Manchester Police said the force was necessary. At least 15 police officers and one police dog, they said, were injured during the disturbances.
