Tour de France's UK appeal

Updated on 05 July 2007

It is hoped the Tour de France will rejuvenate the UK's interest in cycling.

It's the world's biggest annual sporting event - and it's coming to London this weekend.

More than a million people are expected to turn out for the opening ceremony of the Tour de France - before all 189 cyclists set off from the capital on Sunday on the first stage of the race.

The London mayor Ken Livingstone said he hoped it would encourage more people to take up cycling. But campaigners say Britain's streets are often death traps for unwary cyclists.
