The girl who didn't sing: the Chinese blog reaction to the Olympic mime scandal

Updated on 12 August 2008

By Channel 4 News

Chinese bloggers are having their say on the Olympic opening ceremony's singing scandal, where the girl who appeared to be singing was actually miming to someone else's voice.

Youngster Yang Peiyi was switched at the last minute for Lin Miaoke because she was deemed to be prettier by officials.

However, the voice heard by billions around the globe belonged to Yang Peiyi, as her nine-year-old replacement mimed.

Channel 4 News online looks at some Chinese blogs for reaction to the row.

Chinese bloggers' reaction

From dingding.blog.163.com:

"In the news programmes Yang Peiyi faced the journalists and sang a small song, she looked lovely. To say the least, I consider her looks as really lovely and likeable.

There is no way that because of her looks she should not have been selected. Moreover, I think, there are no ugly children in the world.

The journalists have asked Yang Peiyi if she has any regrets - she says she doesn't - but having read the news I'm not sure I agree."

From blog.sina.com.cn:

"Yang Peiyi is genuinely the hero of the opening of the Olympics, her voice, she touched billions of people, she touched the world.

I hope that everyone who paid attention to Lin Miaoke, also don't forget how your voice moved them, Yang Peiyi!

Children are innocent, I hope people don't feel negative towards Lin Miaoke, we admired her performance after all, let's not argue about this issue. "

From lipuman.com:

"For the Chinese people and the Chinese citizens, I hope that Chen qi gang [the ceremony director] apologises for what happened with Lin Miaoke, for our country's honour and interests. "
