Styles 'sorry for awarding penalty'
Updated on 29 September 2008
Referee Rob Styles has apologised to Bolton for awarding Manchester United a penalty, according to reports.
Styles gave Manchester United a penalty during the Premier League game at Old Trafford on Saturday, but television replays suggested Jlloyd Samuel had tackled Cristiano Ronaldo fairly.
Ronaldo scored the penalty and United won 2-0 but both managers, Sir Alex Ferguson and Gary Megson, agreed the decision was wrong.
Styles missed two Premier League games last season after awarding contentious penalties.
It is claimed he wanted to apologise to Megson immediately after the game but was prevented from doing so by referees' guidelines.
It is understood he e-mailed his manager at Professional Game Match Officials and asked for an apology to be passed on to the club.
