Liverpool have confirmed Martin Skrtel damaged knee ligaments during the 3-2 win at Manchester City.

The Slovakia defender twisted his right knee late in the game and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Martin underwent a scan this morning which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

"He will see a specialist tomorrow to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again."

Skrtel has only missed one Premier League game so far this season.

The injury could affect Liverpool in the Champions League because Sami Hyypia is not eligible to take Skrtel's place in European matches as he was not named in the club's 25-man squad for the competition.
