The Football Writers' Association (FWA) has voted Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo Footballer of the Year ahead of Chelsea hitman Didier Drogba.

It caps a superb season for Ronaldo, who scooped both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year trophies at the end of last month.

The 22-year-old Portuguese star has been in the form of his life as he has put the Red Devils on course for the Premiership and FA Cup Double.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men will wrest the Premiership title back from Chelsea this weekend if they win at Manchester City and Jose Mourinho's men fail to win at Arsenal.

Ronaldo's achievement is all the more remarkable considering the somewhat harsh criticism he received from some fans during the early stages of the season following England's demise at the World Cup.

The United star, whose team-mates Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes came third and fourth respectively in the journalists' voting, will receive his latest prestigious accolade at the FWA Footballer of the Year dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on May 17.

FWA chairman Paul Hetherington said: "After the events of last summer at the World Cup, the vote of the Football Writers' Association shows that what we are all interested in is honouring the best player in the country.

"There has been no agendas carried over from last summer. This was a heavy poll of our members.

"Cristiano has been a runaway winner, and deservedly so... We also know we have a player who is absolutely delighted and honoured to receive this accolade."
