Real Madrid sack Capello
Updated on 28 June 2007
Real Madrid have sacked manager Fabio Capello despite him ending their four-year title drought.
The 61-year-old Italian, who also won the Primera Liga in his one previous season in charge (during the 1996 / 97 campaign), still had two years to run on the contract he signed at the Bernabeu last season.
But the nine-times European champions have decided to wield the axe just 11 days after Capello and his players sealed the title.
Sporting director Predrag Mijatovic said: "We have taken the decision not to continue with Fabio Capello next season.
"It was a difficult decision, but it was a unanimous decision based on an exhaustive report I made to the board.
"We don't think Fabio Capello is the right person to lead Real Madrid into the future given what we want this club to achieve."
Bernd Schuster, who led modest Getafe to the King's Cup final and into the Uefa Cup for the first time, has been installed as the bookies' favourite to succeed Capello.
Real Madrid are looking for their eighth manager in four years after dispensing with the services of Vicente del Bosque, Carlos Queiroz, Jose Antonio Camacho, Mariano Garcia Remon, Wanderley Luxemburgo, Juan Ramon Lopez Caro and now Capello.
