Rangers close gap on Celtic
Updated on 04 January 2009
A second-half double from Kris Boyd and a stunning strike from Pedro Mendes saw Rangers sink bottom side Inverness and close the gap on Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders Celtic to five points.
After the match, Rangers boss Walter Smith insisted that Newcastle United had not been in contact with the club regarding the availability of skipper Barry Ferguson.
Smith said: "If the comments are accurate then it is strange because as far as my chairman, my chief executive and myself are concerned there has been no contact with Newcastle or any other club regarding Barry."
But he added: "I have no influence over who wants to bid for any of the players at Rangers."
The Ibrox manager stressed that it is his fringe players who he is willing to sell rather than his star players like Ferguson.
He added: "The players that are looking to move on are the ones who are outside of the group and are unhappy about not playing. However, all I keep reading about is speculation regarding players who are playing."
