A British BMX rider is hoping to overcome serious injury to chase Olympic glory in Beijing.

Luke Madill broke three vertebrae in his back, a bone in his neck and he broke his nose in an accident while competing in Adelaide in 2006.

One specialist said he would never ride again, but after six months of intensive physiotherapy he is back on his bike and is ranked fifth in the world.

In Beijing, BMX racing will make its debut as an Olympic sport.

Madill has built a replica of the Olympic track in his back garden and he has set his sights on winning a medal.

He said: "To have an Olympic medal, it's not like any other medal, you can't just go out there next year and get it."
