'Party drugs' no problem in rugby
Updated on 21 January 2009
Former England rugby star Jeremy Guscott insists there is no drug problem in the sport despite Matt Stevens' positive test.
Bath and England prop Stevens tested positive for a recreational substance after a Heineken Cup match on December 7 and has been suspended from the elite England squad, until the case is resolved.
But Guscott is adamant the intense nature of the game means it is unlikely the sport has any substantial recreational drug problem to address.
He said: "On the evidence of what I've seen in professional rugby, you've got to be faster, you've got to be fitter, you've got to be stronger. If anything, I'd have thought there might have been a possibility of performance-enhancing drugs appearing.
"But these guys in general are very true and honest to themselves. It takes a lot of hard work to get into the position of representing your country or professional club side.
"It is pretty astounding. Throughout my career there were very little drugs. You know you're going to get drug tested."
In an emotional interview, Stevens admitted he has a problem to address.
He said: "I was tested for a prohibited substance. It is not a performance-enhancing substance.
"It is a very serious substance and something over a period of time I have realised I have an issue with, something I think has basically ruined my life up until this point.
"It is pretty distressing talking about this. When you think how much time and effort so many people have put in to my career. I have thrown it away with irresponsible behaviour."
Players' union chief Damien Hopley admitted he was shocked by Stevens' positive test but promised to support him.
Hopley said: "This is very out of character for Matt. He has built a reputation as a fine ambassador for the game, who does a tremendous amount of voluntary work for a number of charities and good causes.
"We will be doing everything we can to provide Matt with the support he needs at this very difficult time."
