Panic queues form at Stanford banks

By John Sparks

Updated on 18 February 2009

Hundreds of concerned depositors have been queueing outside banks linked to the Texas billionaire Allen Stanford, desperate to withdraw their money after he was accused of a "massive ongoing fraud" by US financial authorities

The Antiguan Prime Minister has asked people not to panic.

Regulators took control of the Stanford Bank Panama to prevent a run on it, while the Stanford Bank Venezuela insisted it had nothing to do with the alleged $8bn fraud.

In Britain, there have been renewed calls for the resignation of Giles Clarke, the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board and the man who did a lucrative deal with Sir Allen.

Lord Morris, a member of the management board of the ECB, insists they had confidence in Stanford and believed the deal would have helped cricket in England and the Caribbean.
