Tonight the Guangdong Military Acrobatic Troupe makes its debut in Britain, with an energetic version of the ballet Swan Lake.

The troupe's version is unconventional, not least because the lead dancer pirouettes on her partner's head.

One of China's most prestigious performance groups, by rights it should be at home preparing to perform in Olympic ceremonies. But the players were given a last-minute dispensation by the Chinese authorities, thanks to diplomatic intervention from a veteran British impresario.
