Rio Ferdinand has extended his Manchester United contract until 2013.
The England international will be 34 when he reaches the end of the new deal and Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted Ferdinand could be the club's next captain.
Ferguson said: "Rio's contribution this season has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance and I am delighted he has signed a new contract.
"Rio has matured into his role at the club and has shown, when needed, what a great captain and leader he can be."
United have already won the Premier League title this season and they are preparing to face Chelsea in the Champions League final.
Ferdinand said: "It is a great honour to be part of this trophy-winning team and to share in the success, which I am sure will continue for many seasons to come."
