If they lose against Croatia at Wembley tonight, it's likely they'll be out of next year's European championships.

It's a familiar scenario. As they reach their final qualifying matches for a major competition, England's footballers are invariably on a knife edge - and tonight's clash with Croatia at Wembley is no exception.

To reach next year's European Championships, they need a point. If they lose, they're probably out.

England coach Steve McLaren, who has been under fire throughout the qualifiers, has decided to do without the services of David Beckham and goalkeeper Paul Robinson in his starting line-up.

The line-up

As expected, England are starting with Scott Carson in goal with Micah Richards, Sol Campbell, Joleon Lescott and Wayne Bridge in front of him.

Gareth Barry keeps his place, as does Shaun Wright Philips - who was chosen ahead of David Beckham. Gerrard, Lampard and Cole complete the midfield. Peter Crouch will start as the lone striker.
