Cahill card appeal fails

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill has failed with an appeal against his red card in the Merseyside derby.

The Australia midfielder was sent off for a tackle on Liverpool's Xabi Alonso but the club asked the Football Association to reconsider.

An independent regulatory commission upheld the decision by referee Mike Riley so Cahill must serve a three-match ban for serious foul play.

He will miss the matches against Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester United.

The suspension could prove a serious blow for Everton because Cahill has scored some important goals for the clubs in recent seasons.

He scored seven goals in 18 league games last season and he has already missed three Premier League games this season through injury.
