Still crying God for St George?

By Nina Teggarty

Updated on 23 April 2009

Perhaps only in England can there be something controversial about celebrating St George's day.

He is the patron saint of Greece, Russia, Ethiopia, Lithuania, boy scouts, and syphilis.

But it was revealed today that the Department of Media, Culture and Sport had spent only £116 on a flag to mark St George, while the Scottish parliament spend over £1m marking St Andrew's day.

Perhaps this bashfulness over St George's day is attributable in part to the fact that celebrating English identity is still regarded by some as a political hot potato.
