Now it began as a project to prepare the historic church of St Martin-in-the-Fields for the future. But it has ended up unearthing exciting discoveries about its past.

The excavation of the 19th Century vaults of the church - on the edge of London's Trafalgar Square - uncovered a Roman limestone sarcophagus containing a human skeleton.

And archaeologists say it may mean that the site once housed a Roman villa.

Our arts correspondent, Nicholas Glass, reports on the intriguing find.
