Pope's shame over US child abuse

On his first visit to the United States, Pope Benedict says US priests involved in child abuse have betrayed "God's mission".

Gordon Brown's arrival in the US has been overshadowed by another high-profile high-profile guest: Pope Benedict.

On his first papal visit to the US, the Pope will also be received at the White House by President Bush and will pay a visit to Ground Zero.

During his journey from Rome, the Pope spoke about the shame of child abuse at the hands of priests in America, in what he termed a betrayal of "God's mission".
