Now it's 'a global struggle against violent extremism'

No more 'war on terror' . Now the United States is fighting a 'global struggle against violent extremism'.

As America's defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld made a surprise visit to Iraq, urging a swift transition to Iraqi control, the White House wants to show it is not engaged in a purely military struggle.

Instead it is now depicting the fight in Iraq and elsewhere as part of a worldwide battle of ideas.

Channel 4 News' Washington correspondent Jonathan Rugman reports.
