Catholics back on the throne?

Updated on 27 March 2009

By Andrew Thomas

Could Britain's monarchy rules be set for its biggest shake-up in over 300 years?

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown is in talks with Buckingham Palace over plans to reform laws that prevent heirs to the throne from marrying Roman Catholics.

News of the discussions come as MPs are being asked today to back a bill aimed at ending the discrimination against Catholics, as well as repealing laws which give male heirs precedence over females.

The bill, promoted by the Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris, has little chance of becoming law, but the revelation that changes are being discussed between Downing Street and Buckingham Palace gives the debate more impetus.
