Gay adoption was not discussed in cabinet today, but government proposals are due next week.

Tony Blair today denied he'd caved in to cabinet colleagues who do not want to see the government grant Catholic adoption agencies an exemption from anti-discrimination laws.

Downing Street issued a statement saying that the issue of gay adoption, which was not discussed around the cabinet table today, was still to be resolved. However, the government will put forward proposals next week.

Earlier the education secretary Alan Johnson indicated that the cabinet would dismiss calls from the Christian lobby to exempt them from legislation that comes into force in April.
