Learning from the 'Days of Glory'?
Updated on 30 March 2007
When French director Rachid Bouchareb's showed his film Days of Glory to Jacques Chirac, he changed the law over equal rights to colonial soldiers. Can Gurkhas here get the same result?
It's rare when a trip to the cinema instigates a change in the law, but when Jacques Chirac watched the Oscar-nominated film the 'Day's of Glory' about the French government's scandalous behaviour towards its colonial soldiers, he imposed new laws recognising these soldiers as equal to all French soldiers.
As the film about World War two is released here, the Gurka's are using the French example to back their campaign asking for the same pension rights as other British soldiers. Thomas Adamson-Coumbousis reports.
