New measures to tackle knife crime will be announced on Monday following the stabbings of five more people in the last 24 hours.

"Shocking and tragic," according to Gordon Brown: after five more stabbings in the last 24 hours, the prime minister said new measures to tackle knife crime would be announced on Monday.

Four people were killed in London and another man is fighting for his life. The Met Police chief Sir Ian Blair said it showed the need for everyone to pull together to end the violence.

The four murders took place with 17 hours of each other.

A 19-year-old was killed in his bedsit in Edmonton, a 20-year-old was stabbed yesterday afternoon in Leyton, a man in his 20s was attacked in Walthamstow and another man was found stabbed to death last night in a disused pub in Tottenham.

A fifth man is critically ill in hospital after he was stabbed in Willesden in north-west London.
