The mother of nine-year-old Shannon Matthews, who went missing for three weeks, is arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

The day after her daughter was found last month Karen Matthews emerged from her home - the relieved mother. Now - just three weeks on - she has been arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of her daughter Shannon, suspected of perverting the course of justice.

This morning friends and neighbours have said they are crushed by the news - but will continue to support the family - at least until more information emerges.

Nine-year-old Shannon Matthews was missing for 24 days when she was discovered less than a mile from her home - in the base of a bed at the house of relative. Michael Donovan - her step father's uncle - has been charged with kidnapping the girl. He's being held in Leeds Prison - and there are reports that he has tried to kill himself, prevented only by the quick reaction of staff at the prison.

Five members of the family have now been arrested.

Michael Donovan was charged on 17th March. On April 3rd - Craig Meehan, Shannon's stepfather, was charged for possessing indecent images of children - but unconnected to the disappearance of Shannon.

The next day his mother and sister - Alice Meehan and Amanda Hyett - were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and attempting to pervert the course of justice. They've now been released on bail.

And late last night Police arrest Shannon's mother, Karen Matthews. It is the latest twist in a case that attracted national media attention from the outset.

So far no charges have been brought. Karen Matthews remains in custody this lunchtime - as she is questioned by police.
