Updated on 08 January 2008
Data obtained by the Tories show a massive increase in the use of emergency accommodation for prisoners.
With prisons full, police stations are taking the strain. New figures show the use of emergency accommodation for prison inmates rose a massive twelve-fold last year.
According to data obtained by the Conservatives, police cells were used almost 61,000 times, compared with just over 4,600 in the previous year.
The Tories claimed police officers were spending more time being jailers and less on fighting crime.
