MI6 not involved in Diana's death

By Jon Snow

Updated on 07 April 2008

The inquest has ruled MI6 had nothing to do whatsoever with the death of Diana, but the hearings at the high court did reveal some embarrassing facts for the secret service.

Sir Richard Dearlove and others were forced to refute the claim of renegade agent Richard Tomlinson that there was a plan to assassinate Slobodan Milosevic in a tunnel using strobe lights.

But C, as he was once known, was forced to confirm that a mid-ranking MI6 officer had indeed proposed the assassination of a Serbian politician during the early days of the Balkan conflict.

MI6 said this was barely more than a proposal which was immediately dismissed. But the fact that an agent even considered a plan does raises questions of how MI6 views targeted assassination.
