The head of MI5 has warned that the terrorist threat faced by Britain is serious and will last for a generation.
Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller said the security services were monitoring 1600 individuals and were aware of 30 ongoing plots.
Tony Blair gave her his backing and Gordon Brown said her words were a "wake-up call".
