McCanns 'had phones tapped'

Updated on 20 September 2007

By Simon Israel

Portuguese police may have tapped the phones of Kate and Gerry McCann and their friends.

Channel 4 News understands that Kate and Gerry McCann and nine of their friends have had their phones tapped by Portuguese police investigating the disappearance of their daughter, Madeleine.

And the programme has also learnt that under news laws passed five days ago, the McCanns can ask for all evidence in the case to be made public.

It comes after a statement from the Portuguese prosecutor which said the McCanns will not need to return for re-interviewing.
