Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is the person we're meant to turn to in a time of crisis.

But with her answers to weekend questions over crime in the capital, she's added to fears of falling victim to violent crime and revealed a worrying lack of awareness of how people spend their days and nights.

But are her fears based in any kind of reality? And how have her words affected perceptions that London is a place where its citizens can no longer walk the streets in safety?
