John and Anne Darwin both sentenced to more than six years for fraud

Back from the dead canoeist John Darwin and his wife Anne are jailed for a total of 12 years and nine months for fraud.

The couple were found guilty of a life insurance scam worth £250,000 by faking Mr Darwin's death, then covering it up for years.

But the judge told them the "real victims" were their sons, who had been kept unaware that their father was still alive.

And he said the couple might have got away with it had they not decided to come back to Britain under a web of further lies.

John Darwin was sentenced to six years and three months and his wife Anne received six years and six months in jail.
