Intent to inflict 'heavy casualties'

Prosecution lawyers say an alleged terrorist plot to bomb planes leaving Heathrow was intended to inflict "heavy casualties" on an "unwitting civilian population".
Eight men have gone on trial accused of conspiring to murder others and endanger aircraft bound for the US and Canada.
Their arrests in 2006 triggered a severe tightening of airport security amid claims that the alleged plotters planned to detonate liquid bombs in mid-air. It led to restrictions that are still in place today.
