Inquest attacks restraint system

Updated on 28 June 2007

By Simon Israel

An inquest rules that the death of Gareth Myatt, 15, was an accident but criticises the failure to review the restraint system.

Gareth Myatt choked and died while guards restrained him at a youth jail. A number of children had complained previously about being injured as a result of being subjected to the restraint system.

It was revealed that in the search for evidence, the police had to raid the Youth Justice Board.

The senior police officer investigating the death told Channel 4 News there was a "woeful failure" in their care of children.
